Internship postings by field: what Carir's board shows this month

In the 30 days to October 1, 2026, Carir's job board held the most internship postings in marketing (82), sales (57) and software engineering (52), followed by design (39) and research (30). Business analyst and electrical engineering internships were the scarcest of the fourteen fields checked, with 7 each. These are counts from one board, not the whole market.

How to read them

Marketing and sales lead because many employers, from startups to retailers, hire interns into those teams, and their postings use plain titles that a search finds. Software engineering is close behind, and its internships are concentrated at technology companies that post on their own hiring boards.

A count is postings, not seats. A large employer can post one listing for an entire summer class, and a small one can post three listings for one role in three cities. Read the low counts as fewer employers posting, not necessarily fewer internships.

If your field is thin, widen the titles

The scarce fields are scarce partly because of naming. Business analyst internships are often posted as strategy, operations or consulting internships; electrical engineering internships are often posted as hardware, firmware or test engineering internships. Search those titles as well, and read each posting's requirements to see whether it asks for your field.

Research internships are spread across very different work, from laboratory science to user research, so add the area to the search: research intern biology, research intern machine learning.

What these numbers do not tell you

  • The whole market. Carir's board reads public job boards, applicant-tracking feeds and government job banks; it is not a census of every internship.
  • Pay, location or deadline. Filter the board for those, or read each posting.
  • Competition. A field with many postings can still have many more applicants per posting.
  • A trend. This is one month; a single month says little about direction.

How we counted

Each figure is the total Carir's public job board search returned for the search shown, limited to postings from the 30 days to October 1, 2026, read on that date. A level word in a search is a must on Carir: intern matches titles with intern, internship, co-op or working student, or postings the source itself marks as internships, and never internal or international. Postings for the same role in several cities count once per posting.

Questions people ask

Which field has the most internships right now?

On Carir's job board, in the 30 days to October 1, 2026: marketing, with 82 internship postings, then sales with 57 and software engineering with 52.

Why are there so few business analyst internships?

Partly naming: many are posted as strategy, operations or consulting internships. Search those titles too and read what each posting asks for.

Does a small number of postings mean fewer internships?

Not necessarily. One posting can hire a whole class of interns, so the count shows how many postings employers made, not how many interns they will take.
