Do auto-apply tools actually work?
It depends entirely on what the tool does before it applies. Automation that sends one generic resume to hundreds of postings is easy to build and easy for employers to detect. Automation that screens a posting first, tailors honestly to it, and stops for your approval is doing the part that actually takes effort. Judge the screening, not the sending.

- What does it refuse to apply to? — A tool with no refusal criteria is a mail merge. Ask what bar a posting has to clear before it will act.
- Does it change the application per posting? — If the same document goes everywhere, the automation is saving you typing rather than improving outcomes.
- Can it invent things about you? — An application is a claim you are making about yourself. Anything a tool adds that you cannot substantiate in an interview is a liability with your name on it.
- Do you see it before it goes? — Review-first costs you a few seconds per application and means nothing goes out that you would not have sent.
- Does it apply to the same company repeatedly? — Several applications to one employer in a week reads as noise to the person receiving them.
What automation genuinely helps with
The expensive parts of applying are reading the posting properly, deciding whether you fit, and rewriting your resume to answer it. Those are the parts worth automating — and the parts most tools skip, because sending is easy and judgement is hard.
