Should I tailor my resume for every job?
Tailor where it changes what a reader concludes, which is usually the top third: the summary, the ordering of your experience, and the language you use for the skills the posting names. Rewriting every bullet point for every application is not sustainable and rarely changes the decision. Tailoring never means claiming experience you do not have.
What to change, in order of value
- The summary line — Two sentences that answer this posting rather than describing you in general. This is the highest-value edit and takes the least time.
- Which experience goes first — The most relevant role and the most relevant projects within it should be highest. Reordering is free and changes what a skim-reader sees.
- The words for things you have already done — If you built pipelines and the posting says ETL, say ETL. This is matching vocabulary, not inventing experience.
- What to cut — Detail that is irrelevant to this posting makes the relevant detail harder to find. Cutting is tailoring.
Where the line is
There is a difference between presenting your experience in the posting's language and claiming experience you do not have. The first is the job of a resume. The second is a problem you will meet again in the interview, under worse conditions.
A useful test: could you talk for two minutes about every line, with examples? If not, it should not be there.
What this does not tell you
- Tailoring cannot close a genuine gap. If a role needs five years of something you have not done, better wording will not fix it.
- Evidence on how much tailoring changes outcomes is thin and mostly vendor-published. Treat confident numbers with suspicion, including ours — we do not publish one.
