Why am I not getting interviews?
Usually one of four things: you are applying to roles you do not qualify for, your resume does not show the qualifications you do have, it is not readable by the software that screens it, or you are applying so late that the shortlist is full. These fail differently and need different fixes, so diagnose before you rewrite anything.
Work out which one it is
The four causes leave different fingerprints. Before rewriting your resume for the fifth time, spend twenty minutes working out which failure you actually have.
- You are not qualified for what you are applying to — Take ten recent applications and, for each, count the listed requirements you clearly meet. If you are routinely meeting fewer than half, the resume is not the problem — the targeting is.
- You are qualified but the resume does not show it — You meet the requirements, but a reader would have to infer it. The work is in the bullet points: name the tool, the scale and the outcome rather than the responsibility.
- The resume cannot be read by the software — Multi-column layouts, text inside images, headers in text boxes and unusual section names all survive a human read and fail a parser. Save as PDF from a single-column layout and check the extracted text.
- You are arriving late — Many shortlists are built in the first days a posting is open. If your applications are consistently going out a week or two after posting, you are competing for the remaining places.
Fix them in this order
Targeting first, because it costs nothing and changes everything downstream. Readability second, because it is mechanical and quick. Content third, because rewriting bullet points is slow and only pays off once the first two are right. Speed last, because it is a habit rather than a task.
What this does not tell you
- Nobody can tell you your odds for a specific role. Employers rarely publish how many people applied or how the shortlist was built.
- Rejection is frequently about things you cannot see — an internal candidate, a frozen requisition, a changed budget. A run of rejections is not proof that something is wrong with you.
- None of this is a substitute for a referral where you can get one.
